'How to' Guide: Zinc or Aluminium Coated Steel Roof

Preparation work
Remember when painting your zinc or aluminium coated steel roof also known as Zincalume, preparation is the key! The first thing you will have to do is, remove all down pipes. It is most important to assess the condition of your zinc or aluminium coated steel roof (Zincalume) before you purchase your preparation and finish coat products, to ensure a long lasting durable finish on your metal roof.

Preparation coatings

For badly rusted areas you will need to wire brush the area down. Next, you will need to clean down your roof with Shieldcoat’s MOULDSHIELD C and a pressure washer that preferably has a pressure of at least 3000 psi.
Now you can apply a coat of Shieldcoat’s RUSTSEAL and allow at least 24 hours drying before applying your sealer coat. If there are large areas of lightly rusted sections on the roof then these areas need to be prepared by cleaning down with a wire brush. Then you will need to clean down your roof with Shieldcoat’s MOULDSHIELD C and a pressure washer that preferably has a pressure of at least 3000 psi.
Next, you can apply a coat of Shieldcoat’s RUSTSEAL or Shieldcoat’s RUSTSHIELD W over the whole roof and let dry, this coat will replace your sealer coat, so you won’t have to apply another sealer coat you will now be ready to apply your finish coating of your choice. If sections of the zinc or aluminium coated steel roof is in a very poor condition it may be best to replace that area of your roof. If it is a new factory painted roof then you will need to apply a coat of apply Shieldcoat’s SHIELDSEAL W Plus to the roof prior to applying you finish coats.

Finish coatings
Once you have applied your sealer to your zinc or aluminium coated steel roof (Zincalume) then you can apply your two coats of with ROOFBOND Roof Paint .

Important Information
We encourage you to take roof safety seriously as it is often not given enough consideration by inexperience tradesmen or DIY. Importantly, wear a respirator when doing roof restoration work and it is recommended to have fall arrest equipment (safety harness/scaffolding).

Final word
Down pipes can be fitted 7 days after you have finished the job and now it is safe to collect your drinking water.

Q: What kind of coverage will I get out of 15lts of Mouldshield C on a my roof?

A: It is difficult to give a coverage rate on 15lt of Moulshield c because it can be diluted between 5:1 up to 20:1 depending on strength needed and again how its applied; sprayed, watering can or broom. Generally one 15lt is enough for a 3 bedroom house roof, leaving you with enough left over to do your bit of cleaning around the home.
